Rob is a Professor of Oceanography (Emeritus) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, with an ongoing interest in the cross-scale transfer of energy in the ocean. Obtaining the multi-dimensional measurements needed to understand these transfers is a theme of his research career. Rob has been developing rapidly-profiling instrument systems for oceanographic studies since 1969, with initial work based on the Research Platform FLIP. Early development of Doppler acoustic velocity profiling (Pinkel 1980, 1981) contributed to the development of the commercial ADCP. On a typical month-long FLIP operation, ten thousand 0-800 m CTD profiles might be collected. The Wirewalker (Rainville and Pinkel 2001, Pinkel et al, 2011) was developed to extend this rapid-profiling capability beyond FLIP, making it generally available. Rob was formerly the Associate Director of the Marine Physical Laboratory at Scripps and is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, The American Meteorological Society and The American Geophysical Union.
